Jay Leno to Perform Free Show
According to MSNBC, Leno, 58, will perform a benefit concert for laid off automakers in the Detroit area. There is just one problem. The April 7 concert is scheduled to take place outside the city limits.
"When I heard Jay Leno was going to perform for the people laid off [in Detroit], I was elated," said Detroit City Councilwoman Martha Reeves. "Then he said Auburn Hills. Auburn Hills is not Detroit."
According to Google Maps, Auburn Hills, population 19,837 in the 2000 census, is located at least ten miles from the city limits.
"Some of my friends don't attend Pistons games because it is too far away from home," said Reeves. "We have Ford Field, the Fox Theatre. . . . We have wonderful facilities here. He could present to Detroit."
Other than the venue, timing is also an issue for "Jay's Comedy Stimulus Plan." The show is scheduled to run during the same weekend as the NCAA Final Four Championship, which is also in Detroit.
On Monday, Leno announced on his show that he is performing a concert for laid off UAW autoworkers and employees from GM, Chrysler and Ford.
"One of my favorite places is Detroit," he said. "There are so many out-of-work autoworkers, people who work hard their whole lives."
