Big Love Offends Mormon Church
According to ABC News, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is enraged about a forthcoming episode of HBO's Big Love. The episode is believed to be showing an endowment ceremony, one of the most sacred rites of the Mormon Church.
A statement from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints read, "It now seems the show's writers are to depict what they understand to be sacred temple ceremonies. Certainly church members are offended when their most sacred practices are misrepresented or presented without context or understanding."
The church has not called for a boycott of Big Love, however, some followers have used blogs and message boards to air their grievances with the show.
The statement also mentioned that HBO had promised the church that Mormonism wouldn't be the focus of the series. The church now takes issue with this, stating that, "Mormon themes are now being woven into the show," and that Mormon characters are often "unsympathetic figures," who are, "narrow and self-righteous."
Earlier this week, HBO released a statement which, according to Reuters, defended its choice to include the ceremony, saying, "Obviously, it was not our intention to do anything disrespectful to the church, but to those who may be offended, we offer our sincere apology."
