Michael Jackson Memorabilia Up For Sale
The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, has agreed to sell more than 2,000 of his personal items in an auction hosted by Darren Julien on April 22-25. The auction will take place next to the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Meanwhile, the items are showcased to the public at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York's Times Square from March 25 to 28, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The auction had been recently stalled when Jackson's lawyers filed a suit to shut it down, but the effect was only temporary as the pop star finally agreed (via a written and signed contract) to proceed with the sale. Jackson is currently $24 million in debt and the auction is estimated to raise between $1.5 to $3.0 million, according to Conde Nast Portfolio magazine.
Flipping through Julien's Auction catalogue, one can find proof that wealth doesn't buy taste. Among the auctioned items include spandex gloves, beaded tube socks, and a molded three-dimensional wall sign of Charlie Chaplin holding a directional "Toilet" sign.
But amidst the trash is the treasure. While Jackson's 13 Grammy Awards aren't for sale, the rest of his career-related trophies are, including the MTV and American Music Awards.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Jackson and his manager handpicked the for-sale items and delivered them to the auction house as follow up. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Grammy's MusicCares charity.
