Is This the End of “Kings”?
18-Apr-2009
Written by: Manny Carrasco

This author sees the end of a promising show in time slot move.

Starting today, Kings will play on Saturdays at 8 p.m. Moved from its regular Sunday time slot, this could be the death knell for the show.

Kings, a show set in an alternate reality where kings rule modern nations, follows the country of Gilboa as it rises to power and combats its surrounding nations. It follows the royal family, mainly King Silas, and soldier David, who rises to fame after taking down a tank. The show does not try to hide its colors. It is based on the story of David from the Bible and often, faith is a big focus of the episodes.

Kings is an ambitious effort. Francis Lawrence, director of blockbusters Constantine and I Am Legend, directed the show's two-part pilot. It creates an entire mythology and episodes are budgeted at a robust $4 million.

NBC has put a lot of confidence in this show, yet, in its Sunday 8 p.m. time slot, Kings has been a massive disappointment. While the episodes have been some of the best on television, no one has been watching.

According to numbers acquired by TVSeriesFinale.com, The TV show's two-hour premiere ratings failed to impress anyone with a fourth place showing and made matters worse by losing viewers the following week.

Saturdays are reserved for repeats, synidicated shows like Legend of the Seeker, the new Xena: Warrior Princess, or dumped shows like Kings.

While this news comes with not enough time to wrap up the show's conclusion, fans of the show should be grateful that it has not been axed completely. According to AceShowBiz.com, NBC will roll out the rest of the season's episodes, which total 14.
