Slumdog Star Caught in Scandal

One of the child stars of "Slumdog Millionaire" was almost sold by her father to undercover reporters.

According to the New York Daily News, the father of Slumdog Millionaire star Rubina Ali, 9, tried to sell her to reporters disguised as a prospective family.

Rafiq Qureshi attempted to charge two reporters from England's News of the World $300,000 for his daughter. Qureshi said, "I have to consider what's best for me, my family and Rubina's future." Qureshi reportedly raised his asking price during negotiations due to the child's newfound prominence. Qureshi's brother said, "The child is special now. This is an Oscar child!"

While Qureshi claims that the family received no compensation for Ali's work in the film, director Danny Boyle has arranged for apartments for Ali and fellow child star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, along with their families. Boyle has also set up a trust fund for Ali's education.
