Obsessed Shoots to the Top
The thriller, starring Beyonce Knowles, racked up a whopping $28.5 million in ticket sales after its release this weekend, according to the Associated Press. Obsessed stars Knowles and Idris Elba as a couple whose marriage competes against a temporary employee of Elba's, played by Ali Larter, who begins stalking him.
The movie, which cost about $20 million to make, surpassed industry observers' predictions of opening somewhere in the mid-teen millions, according to Reuters.
Sony Pictures, the company who released Obsessed, was very happy with Knowles's transition into a role without any singing involved.
"This is the first film where she didn't perform musically. And what a way to start. I think she's showing there isn't much she can't do," said Sony's head of distribution, Rory Bruer, according to USA Today.
The comedy, 17 Again, starring Zac Efron, fell right under Obsessed at the number two spot, bringing in $11.7 million, a 51 percent drop since its debut. Fighting, an action flick with Channing Tatum, came in third with $11.4 million, and the Robert Downey, Jr. and Jamie Foxx drama, The Soloist, brought in only $9.7 million, putting it in fourth place.
