Shanna Moakler Walks Away from Miss California USA Controversy
Shanna Moakler, the co-director of the Miss California USA organization, has stepped down from her position, People.com reports.
According to the Web site, Moakler took action Wednesday, a day after Miss California USA Carrie Prejean was allowed to keep her crown despite controversy regarding her topless photos and public stance against same-sex marriage.
"I cannot with a clear conscience move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it," says Moakler, a former Miss USA, in a statement.
This was a dramatic change of heart for Moakler, who on Tuesday offered her support to Prejean, 21, after Donald Trump, co-owner of the Miss Universe organization, allowed her to continue as Miss California USA and Miss USA runner-up.
"This was a very sad decision for me. I stayed up all night trying to make the right decision," Moakler tells People magazine.
Moakler recently initiated an ad campaign to have Proposition 8 overturned in California.
