Idol Finale Wrap-UP
As Ryan said after round one, Tuesday night's American Idol season 8 finale was "too close to call."
The first song that each of the boys sang was a song they chose for themselves and both chose songs they had previously sung during the competition. Adam Lambert sang Gary Jules's "Mad World" to start the night off, and Kris Allen, "Aint' No Sunshine," by bill Withers. Judge Simon Cowell claimed Allen won the first round, but by round two Lambert was back in the game.
Adam sang, "A Change Is Gonna Come," a choice by Idol producer Simon Fuller, and had the judges at a standstill. Paula said it was the best she ever heard the finalist sing while on the competition, and, like always, she got up to wave her hands around in glee.
Fuller's choice for Kris was Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," which judge Randy Jackson claimed was a little light for the final round of the competition. Paula said Kris tore it up and made Marvin Gaye proud, and Simon got booed when he said Kris did not make it his own and was something three boys could have done in their bedroom.
Round two went "a million percent to Adam," Cowell said. A call that evened the playing field before the boys sang the last song that would determine their Idol fate.
In round three, Adam and Kris sang the song that will become the winner's first single. Judge Cara Dioguardi co-wrote the song, entitled "No Boundaries," that unlike last year, where the finalists had unique final songs, was the same for the two boys. Cathy Dennis and Mitch Allen were also co-writers on the song.
After Adam's performance, Paula said Adam could sing whatever he wanted and she would be a fan, Simon said he believes they have found a worldwide star with Adam Lambert, and even Ryan called him a class act.
Kris got to perform "No Boundaries" after Adam on Tuesday night, and ended the competition with the song that Randy said fits his voice even a little better than Adam's. Cara said she doesn't want Kris to be judged on the last song, and hopes people vote based on the season.
Paula said this has been one of the most compelling finales, which Simon followed up with telling Kris that the first song was his highlight of the night for him. He told Kris he "thoroughly, thoroughly" deserved to be standing on the stage at the finale.
"Me and Adam, we said we weren't competing we just wanted to give a good show tonight," Allen said as his last words of the night, keeping up with his modest attitude.
