Second "Slumdog" Star's House Demolished
The nine-year-old "Slumdog Millionaire" actress had her house bulldozered by authorities in the Indian city of Mumbai, BBC News reported on Wednesday.
Rubina Ali played the leading female character, Latika, in her childhood years. She said she had been at a market and returned to find her home had gone, according to BBC News.
Debris were all that was left of the star's bubblegum pink home, and now her and her 10-year-old co-star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, whose home was swept away just last week, are without a place to sleep.
According to the Associated Press, around 11 a.m. Wednesday, demolition crews started making their way down the shanties on Rubina's lane, as dozens of police with bamboo batons and guns patrolled the area. By 1:35 p.m. there was nothing left of the nine-year-old's home and her father had been taken to the hospital after a 15-minute beating by 10 policemen.
The Associated Press reported that "Slumdog" director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson set up a trust to ensure the children get demolition free homes, an exceptional education and a "nest egg" when they finish high school. The duo have also donated $747,500 to a charity helping slum kids in Mumbai.
