Family Squabble Endangers MLK Movie
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s children have been at odds for the past few years, but add a movie deal to the equation and they have more problems.
The three surviving King siblings, Martin Luther King III, Bernice King and Dexter King, are in a disagreement now that a movie portraying the life of their father may be in the works.
The two older siblings, Martin III and Bernice, live in Georgia, while Dexter lives in California. Dexter was handling the deal with DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg but closed the deal without consulting the other two siblings.
According to CNN, DreamWorks is now threatening to back out of the movie if peace isn't found within the family.
In a statement issued by DreamWorks, the studio maintains the project will go on provided the family can resolve their differences.
"The purpose of making a movie about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is to tell a great story which could bridge distances and bring people together," the statement said. "We remain committed to pursuing a film chronicling Martin Luther King's life provided that there is unity in the family so we can make a film about unity in our nation."
