The Golden Globes '05: Who Were the Big Winners?
Ever wonder about the difference between the Golden Globes and the Oscars? Well, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) started this celebratory awards ceremony more than six decades ago with the intention to raise funds for entertainment-related charities and scholarships. The journalists of HFPA reward stellar contributions, in both television and film and hold the ceremony before the Academy Awards each year.
Since the Globes set somewhat of a precedent for the Oscars, Leonardo DiCaprio should be quite happy. He snagged a Globe for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Drama) for "The Aviator" at the 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards Ceremony Sunday night. "The Aviator" also won for Best Picture (Drama) and Best Original Score.
"Sideways," starring Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, is a film about two pals who go on a guy tour of the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley. This sleeper film took home a Globe for Best Picture (Comedy). "Sideways" also won for Best Screenplay.
Jamie Foxx was on cloud nine after winning Best Actor in a Leading Role for his dead on depiction of the late Ray Charles in the film "Ray."
Hillary Swank won Best Actress in a Leading Role (Drama) for "Million Dollar Baby," a film about a hardened fighter, played by Clint Eastwood, who trains a determined woman (Swank) in her attempt to establish herself as a boxer. The film was also directed by Eastwood, who won Best Director for this film.
Robin Williams, an 11-time Golden Globe Award nominee and five-time winner, received the HFPA's highest honor, the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contribution to entertainment. This award is voted on by the board of directors of the HFPA.
The film "Closer" also scored big, with Natalie Portman winning Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Clive Owen getting a Globe award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
For television, the big winners were "Nip/Tuck" for Best Television Series (Drama), and "Desperate Housewives" for Best Television Series (Comedy). Teri Hatcher also won for Best Actress in a Leading Role for "Desperate Housewives."
Can't wait to see who the winners are at the Oscars now!
