Weekend Box Office Round-Up
The Night at the Museum sequel scored big this weekend, stomping on the fourth installment of the "Terminator," the first in six years.
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian earned $70 million during the Memorial Day weekend, beginning Friday, which outdid 20th Century Fox's prediction for its own holiday weekend movie, Reuters reports.
Without Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terminator Salvation could not rank number one. The movie made its debut at number 2, earning an expected $53.8 million, according to Reuters.
Star Trek fell to number 3 this weekend and Angels & Demons, number 4, still earning $27.7 million in its second weekend on the silver screen.
Ben Stiller earned a new live-action record for himself, according to Reuters. His previous best was made for his staring role in Meet the Fockers, a 2004 film.
The original Night at the Museum made $30 million in its opening weekend pre-Christmas 2006, and made a total of $250 million. The sequel cost about $125 million to make, according to Reuters.
Dance Flick expectedly came in fifth place, earning $13.1 million, which is said to be good for the holiday weekend. Damon Wayans, Jr., Craig Wayans, Shoshana Bush and Essence Atkins starred in the film.
"The No. 1 location for the picture in the country was the Imax theater at the Smithsonian," Imax Filmed Entertainment chief Greg Foster told the Hollywood Reporter.
The movie had a 51 percent female to 48 percent male viewership, with a lot of its support coming from families, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Next week, two new films will hit the big screen to vie for the number 1 spot and earn the big bucks.
