Will star opposite Paul Giamatti in cop drama.
According to Daily Variety, Dustin Hoffman has signed on to star in an upcoming indie film.
Barney's Version features as Hoffman's opposite, Sideways' Paul Giamatti. Hoffman's role is a retired cop and father of Giamatti's character, a man suspected of murder in the disappearance of his best friend.
The film will be produced by Robert Lantos through his Serendipity Point banner. Richard J. Lewis will direct the adaptation.
The movie is based on Mordecai Richler's last novel. It is also the third movie based on Richler's work. The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, starring Richard Dreyfuss and Randy Quaid, premiered in 1974. That was followed up with Joshua Then and Now, starring James Woods as a successful writer who has to patch up relationships with his wife and family amid a sex scandal. The latter film was produced by Lantos, who also oversaw the production of Eastern Promises and Being Julia.
