Child actors of "Slumdog Millionaire" to be given new homes
The chief minister of the state of Maharastra in India has decided to provide a home for the two child stars of recent sleeper hit, "Slumdog Millionaire," according to the New York Times. Rubina Ali Qureshi and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail who portrayed Latika and Salim, respectively, had previously lost their dwellings to the destruction caused by municipal workers. Both children's homes were located in an apparently illegal location that is usually demolished before the monsoon season in India. Director of the film Danny Boyle and Christian Colson, producer, first made the decision to try to relocate the children.
BBC news states that the mother of Azharuddin expected her child to be well compensated for his hard work on the film. After Boyle proposed to help the children's living situations, he was criticized by the press for not giving them enough attention. The chief minister said preparations are in order to restore the children to "a life of dignity."
