‘The Hangover’ Is a Hit with Critics

Critics rave over an otherwise standard comedy
Go figure. A concept that is hardly original, “a wild and crazy bachelor party in Vegas” is a smash with the critics.
Currently “The Hangover” sits at 81 percent at RottenTomatoes.com and is roundly receiving praise for the absurd brand of humor it offers.
The Hollywood Reporter calls it “Head-poundingly, sidesplittingly funny.” Roger Ebert says “’The Hangover’ is a funny movie, flat out, all the way through. Its setup is funny. Every situation is funny.” Claudia Puig from the USA Today has similar comments but with some reservations: “Though the film falters toward the end, ‘The Hangover’ is a side-splitting adventure you’ll still be laughing about the morning after.”
The Todd Phillips (“Old School,” “Starsky and Hutch”) comedy is about a group of four friends, one of whom is about to get married. So, they do what every cinematic group of friends does when one amongst them is about to get married: they go to Vegas.
The film is unique in the way it focuses on the night after the bachelor party, a la “Dude Where’s My Car,” as opposed to the party itself. Waking up from a night of debauchery they cannot recall, they try to piece together what happened the night before and answering riddles such as why they have a baby, why there’s a tiger in the bathroom, and the whereabouts of the groom-to-be.
The comedy stars Bradley Cooper from “Wedding Crashers” fame, Ed Helms from “The Office” and “The Daily Show,” and comedian Zach Galifianakis.
Universal executives apparently are confident in the success of the film. They have already commissioned a sequel.
