Sewage Ruins Swimming Plans in Brooklyn
8-Jun-2009

Water may be contaminated near Brooklyn and Manhattan

It was a disappointing day for many residents of the Brooklyn and Manhattan area on Sunday. It’s reported by Brooklyn’s Daily News that sewage may have spilled from a treatment plant in to Coney Island and Manhattan beaches.

As bummed out as everybody was, most people obeyed the rule that no one was allowed to swim in the water. According to the Daily News, officers even kept people from putting their feet into the water. One man, however, disobeyed orders and was arrested.

“He was cited for failing to comply with an officer”, said Meghan Lalor, a spokeswoman with the city Parks Department. “The city closed the surf at Manhattan Beach and Coney Island Beach, which remained opened for sunbathing only. Tests will be done daily to determine when the beaches can reopen.”

Some feel the city is overreacting, but some would prefer to wait until the risk is over.

“We better listen to the warnings," said Queens plumber Jose Rodriguez, who held back is 8-year-old from getting in to the water. “There will be other summer days.”
