AFI award bestowed upon Michael Douglas
13-Jun-2009
Written by: Sari N. Kent

Actor Michael Douglas was honored with AFI’s Lifetime Achievement award where many of his co-stars came together to pay tribute to Douglas and his accomplishments.

Actor Michael Douglas was honored with the American Film Institute’s (AFI) Lifetime Achievement award for all of his industry triumphs and superb motion picture roles.

According to an article on HollywoodReporter.com, this particular award recipient brought about a milestone in AFI history, “For the first time in the history of the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Awards, a previous recipient -- Kirk Douglas, the 19th achievement award winner -- was on hand to see the honor passed on to his son, Michael Douglas, the 37th recipient.”

“I'm too young to have a son getting a lifetime achievement award,” Kirk, 92, cracked as he rose to lead off the evening of testimonials.

Kiefer Sutherland, who starred with Douglas in 2006’s “The Sentinel,” said that he felt an instant bond with Douglas since both actors had the arduous task of honoring their already Hollywood established fathers while attempting to make their own marks in the industry.

When it was time for Douglas to accept the award on Soundstage 15 on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, he accredited his success to “great genes,” paying tribute to his father and mother, Diana Douglas, who continue to work today “with the same passion for acting as when they began over 70 years ago.”

Other features of the evening included Douglas’s wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, opening the ceremony with a high-stepping routine to the tune of “One” from “A Chorus Line,” with lyrics rewritten to pay tribute to her husband. Legendary singer Bob Dylan made a surprise appearance and sang the Oscar-winning song from Douglas’s 2000 film, “Wonder Boys.”

The HollywoodReporter.com article mentions another highlight from the event, “A trio of Douglas' female co-stars -- Kathleen Turner, Sharon Stone and Annette Bening -- spoke of his interest in roles that explored the tensions between men and women.”

Other co-stars of Douglas’s who were in attendance included Matthew McConaughey, Tobey Maguire, Martin Sheen, Benicio Del Toro and Warren Beatty.

The affair will be broadcast July 19 on TV Land Prime.
