Flag Day
14-Jun-2009

Flag Day’s celebration honors Canadian native.
This Sunday was the day when America takes a moment to recognize Old Glory, the American Flag, that is. June 14 has been marked as the official Flag Day, celebrating when Continental Congress officially made the red white and blue star spangled banner our nation’s flag on June 14, 1777.
The Chicago Tribune celebrated this day by taking a moment to recognize an Elgin resident who is being hailed as a Flag Hero today. Jeff Olsen, 34, a garbage truck driver for Waste Management, and a Canadian native, has been honored for saving over 250 flags from the refuse in his truck in a matter of 18 months. This is a task that truck drivers at Waste Management do regularly, but Owen managed to pull out the most flags at the company.
Owen is married to a former medic who served two tours of duty in Kuwait. For this reason, the American flag holds much more of a significance, and he shared that throwing away an American flag would be like stomping it out.
In addition to acknowledging Flag Day, Fox News has reported that President Barack Obama has extended Flag Day to National Flag Week, and asked the nation to observe the period from Flag Day through Independence Day as a celebration of our nation’s heritage.
In a speech on Sunday, Obama addressed the nation, “The stars and stripes tells our nation’s story and embodies its heritage ideas. Its display reminds us of America’s promise and guides us toward a brighter tomorrow.”
