CW Announces Its Fall Schedule

New Shows, New Spin on Old Shows, and Returning Favorites
The CW Network announced its fall lineup for 2009. This year, they’re going retro, again. The network is bringing back “Melrose Place” in its updated look, and “90210”-redux for a second season. Some of its trademark shows are also coming back: The much talked about “Gossip Girl” is back with a new time slot, “One Tree Hill” (“OTH” for short), is back one hour before “Girl,” and “Smallville” is now on Fridays.
It’s a new spin on the same shows and a revamp of sorts with the new “Melrose” series being paired against “90210’s” second season. “OTH” and “Girl” simply swapped times for the upcoming season. The new series for fall are “Melrose Place,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and “The Beautiful Life: TBL.”
Jackie Strause at the NYpost.com suggests that the change in time slots echoes of the strategy used by the network last year; “Girl” is the risqué Upper Eastside, New York lifestyle, while “Hill” is trying to appeal to a much younger audience since its five-year time-leap two seasons ago. Eric Deggans at Tampabay.com refers to “The Vampire Diaries” as “Twilight the TV Show.” After all, it wouldn’t be the first time that the network has had love stories revolving around vampires; a certain “Angel” comes to mind.
Jennifer Goodwin & Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna ask the fans to comment on the possibility that “Girl” will be having more adult-minded story lines in its new time slot. The network is always trying to display its products earlier than the big 3, CBS, ABC, and NBC, in order to have a competing chance. The earlier the show comes out, the bigger the exposure for its stars and a fighting chance for the network. Returning are also some of its biggest hits like “America’s Next Top Model” and “Supernatural.”
