Hollywood Does the Monster Mash
18-Jun-2009

New monster movies in development by Universal.
According to the Daily News, 1935’s “Bride of Frankenstein” will be remade. Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are in talks with Neil Burger who will write and direct the new version.
Burger will share the writing work with Dirk Wittenborn, Reuters reports. Most recently, Burger wrote and directed “The Illusionist,” starring Edward Norton.
According to Monstersandcritics.com, the original film starred Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as his bride, continuing 1931’s “Frankenstein.”
It is hard to understand why this classic movie is being remade. According to Geeksofdoom.com, Guillermo del Toro will be remaking “Frankenstein,” a precursor to “Bride of Frankenstein.” However, Burger’s movie will have to come out second in order to draw any viewers.
This is a pattern in Hollywood, remaking old monster movies. “The Wolf Man” and “Creatures from the Black Lagoon” are in development. We can only hope this trend sticks, and works. Universal, in particular, is eager to remake its catalog of classic monster movies.
