Shaker Heights Yearbook Picture Yields Hidden Obscenity
18-Jun-2009
Written by: John Winn

High school student who designed the cover forced to apologize.

According to MTV Online, a Shaker Heights, Ohio high school student has been forced to apologize, following the discovery of a profane message he designed on the cover of the high school yearbook.

The student has since been made to apologize by Shaker Heights High School Principal Michael G. Griffith, who recalled the yearbooks after confirming, "An obscenity was found in the yearbooks."

In a statement, the student, who has not been identified, expressed his remorse for the incident to parents and faculty.

"I cannot begin to explain the miserable feeling I brought upon myself," he said. "I apologize for offending anyone and everyone. It is unfortunate that I did not recognize the big responsibility and honor given to me when asked to design the cover of the Shaker Heights yearbook. I offer my sincere apologies."

The cover of the yearbook, illustrated by an outgoing senior, contained a concealed message that could only be read if the book was turned outside down: "F--- all y'all."

Griffith has had the art department rework the cover, and students are invited to turn in their original yearbooks for the "cosmetically enhanced" version. But with limited supplies of the original version in demand, that isn't likely to happen, fueling speculation that it will become a collector's item.

That sits just fine with incoming senior Katie Rownd, who told Cleveland TV station Fox 8 that she has no problem with the lewd textbook.

"Thirty years down the road, it's kinda funny to flip it upside down and be like 'Oh look what's hidden!'" she said.

Although the identity of the artist has not been identified, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, during the school's graduation ceremony last week, "He received the loudest, most sustained applause of any fellow student as he accepted his diploma."
