Transformers sequel No. 1 abroad despite small opening
While "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" remains a week away from release here in the states, it premiered in two key foreign markets this past weekend and finished atop the international circuit after the weekend, a THR.com story reports.
The sequel to 2007's "Transformers" opened in the U.K. totaling $14.1 million from 517 screens, and made $5.8 million off of 329 sites in Japan. That's a 71 percent increase from the first film's U.K. debut.
In the meantime, the romantic-comedy, "The Proposal," starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, finished No. 1 in American box offices, dethroning "The Hangover" with a weekend total of $34.1 million.
"Revenge of the Fallen" opens worldwide Wednesday, June 24. The first "Transformers" installment opened July 3, 2007, making $70.5 million in its opening domestic weekend and $319 million in domestic total gross.
"Revenge" stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. Both were featured in the 2007 release as well.
