Cheney Plans to Publish Memoir
24-Jun-2009
Written by: Stephanie DeLuca

Bush’s former vice president will discuss his life in the government during the last 40 years in his new book.

Vice President Dick Cheney just signed a contract with Threshold Editions, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, to write a memoir about his life in politics, the New York Times reported.

The currently untitled book will cover Cheney’s career in government. The memoir will explain everything from his position as chief of staff under President Ford to Vietnam and Watergate to the September 11 attacks.

Cheney’s adviser and close friend, Mary Matalin, will be the editor in chief of the new book, according to a spokesperson for Simon & Schuster. The memoir, which will be mainly about his 40 years in Washington, will be published in the spring of 2011. Cheney is getting help to “fill in the gaps” by his eldest daughter, Liz Cheney.

“He’s a student of history, and I think he never really planned to write a book,” Liz told the New York Times. “But I think because the job he just finished is obviously his last job he’ll ever have in government and because he cares about history and has been part of so many consequential events over the last 40 years, he wants to make sure that his story is told, and told in a way that his grandchildren will be able to understand and appreciate even 20 or 30 years from now.”

According to the New York Times, a person who is familiar with the negotiations said Cheney will receive $2 million for his book. The spokesman for Simon and Schuster refused to comment.
