This year’s Virgin Mobile music festival dubbed FreeFest
24-Jun-2009

Weezer and Blink-182 will co-headline free Columbia, Md. festival.

Organizers of the 2009 Virgin Mobile Festival announced that this year’s festival will be free and will be held Aug. 30 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.

Pastemagazine.com reported Wednesday that 35,000 free tickets will be made available for FreeFest on June 27 via ticketmaster.com. However, Virgin Mobile customers or individuals who purchased tickets for previous Virgin Fests may expect first dibs on tickets via an e-mail on June 25 or 26. Ticketmaster delivery fees will still apply, but tickets may be picked up for free at the venue or the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.

Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P., the independent concert promoter that will produce and promote the event, talked to Billboard.com about the decision to waive admission fees. “It really comes from a sincere desire to make people happy,” Hurwitz said.

Weezer and Blink-182 will co-headline while other scheduled acts on the two main stages and dance tent include Girl Talk, The National, Franz Ferdinand, Public Enemy, The Bravery, Jet, the Hold Steady, St. Vincent, Wale, Taking Back Sunday, Holy F*ck, Pete Tong, Danny Howells and Lee Burridge.
