Governor Goes AWOL Over Father's Day Weekend

Gov. Mark Sanford, who went missing for 5 days, turned out to be in Argentina with his lover

He may not be as bad as Eliot Spitzer, but Gov. Mark Sanford isn't much better.

The South Carolina governor reportedly went missing over Father's Day Weekend and could not be reached by his staff or even by his own family from Thursday until yesterday when he returned.

It turned out the governor was in Argentina with the woman he'd been having an affair with, reports The New York Times.

According to the Huffington Post, Sanford's staff originally claimed he had decided to take a respite from a bitter battle over the stimulus package by hiking alone along the Appalachian Trail.

However, upon Sanford's return yesterday, he revealed that he had actually spent "the last five days of my life crying in Argentina," according to the Huffington Post, with a woman who he referred to as a "dear, dear friend" with whom he'd eventually become intimate with.

"I've let down a lot of people, that's the bottom line," the governor said. Among them are his wife and his four sons.

Sanford has not resigned his post as governor. The next five days may be even harder for Sanford than the last.
