Leno Scheduled for Stand-Up Before New Show

Jay Leno announces his stand-up gig in Wendover before beginning plans for new show.

After holding a 17-year position as a beloved host of "The Tonight Show," Jay Leno is set to begin a new chapter this September with a late-night show on NBC. With a couple months to spare before his premiere, Leno will stop in Wendover for some stand-up comedy.

For one night only Leno will perform a gig at the Peppermill Concert Hall this Saturday night. The car collector likes Wendover in particular because of its close proximity to the Bonneville Salt Flats where some of his cars are raced, reported The Salt Lake Tribune.

Leno is no stranger to stand-up and admits the opportunity will help with his withdrawal symptoms from not performing live in front of an audience every night. Despite a lifetime of comedy routines, the 59-year-old never produced a DVD of his work or an HBO series. He believes hearing jokes for the first time, surrounded by others who are doing the same, is the only way to experience it.

"People don't gather anymore. It's a shared experience," he told The Salt Lake Tribune.

As for his new show, scheduled to air Sept. 14, Leno and producers are putting the finishing touches on what to incorporate in regard to comedy skits and live musical acts. And he will, of course, continue his occasional stand-up.

"I will come to where you are and do it," he said.
