Spider-Man musical in the works
Ridiculous or awesome? The news of a Spider-Man musical is already awkward, but the casting of the comic book inspired show is even more eccentric. MTV.com reports that starlet Evan Rachel Wood shall portray Peter Parker’s love interest, Mary Jane, while Scottish actor Alan Cumming will portray Spider-Man’s nemesis, the Green Goblin. Some of the music will actually be composed by rock greats of U2, Bono and The Edge.
According to Julie Taymor who is director of the production, the hopes for Wood to star in the musical were well cemented. “Evan is unique . . . she has an extraordinary lyrical voice.” Wood had previously made her singing debut in the re-vamped version of a Beatles compilation, the film, “Across the Universe.” Taymor also looked forward to casting Cumming as he “has such range and charisma as a performer.”
Wood has stated, as reported on UPI.com, that she was honored to be part of the cast and gushed to Jimmy Fallon about working with Bono and looking over the score with guitars. The musical is set to open in the spring of 2010.
