'Transformers' Holds on to Explosive Box Office Numbers
27-Jun-2009
Written by: Kelsey Zukowski

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' gets negative reviews but increasingly soaring sales.

The original "Transformers" film made $319 million throughout its theatrical release and was the third most profitable film at the U.S. box office in 2007. Two years later, the sequel, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," is ruling the box office once again.

The film made $126 million in its first three days. "Transformers 2" made $60.6 million on its opening day, beating the previous record for a Wednesday release set by "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" in 2007 with $44 million.

The "Transformers" sequel is aiming to beat the massive $203.8 million intake that "The Dark Knight" reached in its first five days last summer. The film's first day intake of $60.6 million has already fallen slightly short of "The Dark Knight's" record of the highest single day box office sales at $67 million. Box office analyzers and executives predict that within its five-day run "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" will hit $190 million. It is also likely to earn just as much internationally. It seems the film will mostly come close, but fall slightly short of "The Dark Knight."

So far, 2009's most profitable film has been "Star Trek," taking in $244 million over the film's first seven weeks of release in the U.S. and Canada.

"Transformers" doesn't seem to have much other competition, either. The only other major film released this weekend was the tearjerker, "My Sister's Keeper," starring Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin. It took in $5.1 million on Friday and hit number four at the box office, behind "The Proposal" and "The Hangover." It is estimated to end the weekend between $13 to $15 million.

The sequel has enough in common with the original. Michael Bay is back, which means the big action sequences and explosions are back. It also reunites stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. However, critics have universally trashed the film when the first had mostly positive reviews. Even this wide amount of denouncing of the film doesn't seem to be enough to keep audiences away as the film's sales grew 28 percent from Thursday to Friday, giving time for the word to get out. Robotic chases and explosions seem to outdo the power of critical forewarning.
