BET Awards Undergo Changes after Jackson Death
The ninth annual BET Awards will have some last minute changes before it airs tonight, all of which pertain to the memory and celebration of Michael Jackson.
Jackson, who died Thursday afternoon, was a large influence on the channel, its viewers, and the artists attending the ceremony.
The Washington Post reports the show was thrown into "total overhaul" by the death of the musical legend, altering guest lists, performances, and red carpet festivities.
Producer Stephen Hill said performances by artists such as Ne-Yo and Beyonce will undergo changes to pay tribute to Jackson. Hill also said some artists who had not intended to attend the show, such as Usher and Justin Timberlake, were trying to catch last-minute flights to Los Angeles, where the award show is taking place.
Network Chairman and Chief Executive Debra L. Lee said the show will still award the best in music, acting and sports, but there would be a focus "more geared toward Michael Jackson."
It is not yet clear whether any of Jackson's surviving family will attend the ceremony.
The show airs at 8 p.m. from the Shrine Auditorium. Jamie Foxx is host.
