’Transformers’ Sequel Exceeds Expectations with $201 Million Debut
28-Jun-2009
Written by: Alyssa DellaCamera

The film’s five-day debut totals $201 million.

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" earned $201 million in its first five days in theaters to become the third-biggest movie of the year at the North American box office, Reuters reports.

Paramount Pictures, the studio that owns the film, announced on Sunday that it has collected an estimated $201.2 million since its Wednesday release in theaters. Earlier this week the studio reportedly predicted a five-day total within the $130 million to $150 million range, while industry analysts forecast a higher sum of $175 million.

"For me the high water mark was, could you get to $200 million in seven days?" explained Don Harris, the executive vice-president of distribution at Paramount. Harris also said movie theater owners were skeptical of the film meeting his goal.

However, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," the sequel to the 2007 hit "Transformers," has exceeded everyone's expectations, as it now trails "Up" and "Star Trek," the two current biggest movies of the year, by less than $50 million, Reuters reports. According to Paramount, the film is now expected to reach the $300 million mark by the end of next weekend.

"We should have three really strong weeks before 'Harry Potter [and the Half-Blood Prince]' comes in [on July 15]," Harris said.
