'The Bachelorette': Hometown Surprises
The fifth season of "The Bachelorette" continued Monday night on ABC with Jillian Harris meeting the five remaining bachelors' families in their hometowns.
Her first stop was Philadelphia, where realtor Reid has resided. While meeting the family, Reid's mom said she would love to have a designer in the family, regarding Jillian's occupation. During a conversation with her, Jillian told his mom about her impression of Reid: He does not easily open up and is cautious about his feelings. While the mom approved her, Reid's dad also did the same.
"Our relationship grew again and got to another level today," Reid said after Jillian said goodbye to the family, adding that he is falling in love with her.
Next, she met with Michael in his Valencia, Calif., hometown. The break dance instructor surprised her by introducing her to his identical twin brother. At his family's house, he attempted to trick Jillian by pulling the classic switcheroo with his brother, but she didn't fall for it.
"She's knocked me off my feet pretty good," Michael told his family. In the beginning, Jillian was concerned about his age and whether he is ready to settle down. After meeting his family and hearing their being proud of him, however, she believed he could handle being married.
Jillian's third stop was San Diego, Kiptyn's hometown. The 31-year-old business developer introduced her to his step-dad, mom, brother and his girlfriend, and sister. The family challenged her by making her taste two lasagnas and two wines and saying which combination is better. She would pass the test by guessing Kiptyn's dad's "famous" lasagna, which she did.
Jillian said she felt like a "hillbilly" while being around the "very polished and educated" family. In return, they believed she would fit right in. Kiptyn hoped Jillian would keep him for the next round so that he'd have a chance to explore and see what is possible.
In Carmel, Calif., Jillian met with Jesse, whose family owns a winery. The 27-year-old introduced her to his parents and brother. Jillian admitted to his mother that she had gotten off to a slow start with Jesse. "He doesn't open up as much as the other guys," she said. Like with Michael, she's also concerned if he's ready to settle down.
After approval from the family, Jesse said, "I keep wanting to move forward and have another chance."
The last hometown Jillian visited was filled with surprises. Austin is home to musician/bad boy Wes, who serenaded her with his band on their outdoor stage. Afterward, Wes continued to assure her that he is there for the right reasons. (On the contrary, other guys on the show have believed otherwise.)
Meanwhile, Jake, who was eliminated last week, made a surprise return because he felt Jillian should know the truth about Wes: He has a girlfriend. After meeting with her and confronting Wes, the end result was Jillian in tears for being hurt, Jake tearful for seeing her hurt, and Wes who thought that Jake was a liar. Ultimately, Jillian decided to meet with Wes's family anyway, who all assured her that he is a good boy and that other guys will always be jealous of him.
Just when Jillian thought things had calmed down again, surprise! Likeable Ed showed up at her door and wanted back in the competition! Amidst confusion and happiness upon seeing his return, Jillian invited him to the rose ceremony, where things heated up fast.
The men were shocked to see Ed arrive at the ceremony. Chris Harrison, the host, reminded them that even though an extra guy was put in the mix, only four men will still make it to the next round. In the end, Jillian decided to let Reid, Kiptyn, Ed and . . . yes, Wes, through. Jesse, who believed Wes was there for the wrong reasons, went home, along with a brokenhearted Michael.
"For a girl who just dumped me and just broke my heart, I could not say a bad thing about her," he tearfully said.
Next week, the four remaining men will live it up with Jillian in romance-filled Spain.
