MSNBC's 'Lockup' to Get International Treatment
2-Jul-2009
Written by: John Winn

Prison documentary series follows inmates as they navigate penal system.

Come fall, MSNBC viewers in Israel, Turkey and Thailand may get a taste of the prison life.

According to Daily Variety, the cable news network has decided to take the popular prison-documentary series international via a new spinoff, "Lockup: World Tour".

Rasha Drachkovitch of 44 Blue Productions will oversee the launch. He previously worked on "Lockup: Extended Stay" and "Stringers: LA".

Among the countries on MSNBC's itinerary: The former Yugoslavia--Drachkovitch's ancestral home--as well as Turkey and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

While Drachkovitch is tight lipped about the show, he does promise it to be revealing, especially for Americans, who tend to think of prisons in the U.S. as harsh.

He said in a statement: "While life in the U.S. is shocking, it's nothing compared to what goes on in prisons around the world."

Since its launch in 2000, "Lockup" has visited over 60 maximum security prisons in the U.S., including California's San Quentin and Louisiana's Angola.

"Lockup: World Tour" is just one in a long line of gigs where Drachkovitch has stuck his neck out to get a story, having been shot at in Soweto and sought after by the Yakuza in Tokyo.

Drachkovich will co-produce alongside MSNBC's Elise Warner.
