Neil Patrick Harris to Host Emmys
2-Jul-2009
Written by: Monica Burton
Neil Patrick Harris will hopefully give a much needed popularity boost to this year’s Emmys.
Neil Patrick Harris is set to host the 61st Emmy Ceremony on Sept. 20, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Multiple sources have confirmed that the “How I Met Your Mother” star has formally signed on to emcee the Emmys.
Emmy producers are under pressure to boost the award show’s ratings after last year’s show that was a disaster both in ratings and critically. The CBS broadcast was especially criticized for using five reality show stars.
Harris, a two-time Emmy nominee, received rave reviews for his performance hosting CBS’ Tony Awards telecast in June. In April, he also hosted the TV Land Awards, which is owned by CBS parent company Viacom, MSNBC.com reports.
In addition to boosting ratings, choosing Harris as Emmy host will give him, and the network, the chance to promote his CBS show “How I Met Your Mother,” which moves to a new Monday night timeslot this season. It would premiere the night after the Emmys, virtually ensuring solid viewership.
