BET Apologizes for Young Money’s Performance at BET Awards
3-Jul-2009
Written by: WileyTaylor

BET reps apologize to the public for Lil Wayne and Drake's performance.

BET has recently expressed their sincerest apologies due to the large amount of complaints from the public for Young Money’s performance at Sunday’s BET Awards 2009 that involved underage girls during the songs, “Best I Ever Had” and “Every Girl.”

The songs contained overt sexual references and had a large group of young girls dancing during the performance. The group of young girls consisted of Lil Wayne’s daughter and her friends. In response to the public’s disapproval of the performance, BET has responded to the public’s criticism in the following statement.

“BET Networks deeply regrets the performance by Young Money at the BET AWARDS ’09 (featuring Lil Wayne, Drake, Gudda Gudda and Mack Maine),” a BET representative told AllHipHop.com exclusively, “Elements of the performance were unplanned and should not have happened.”

At the end of the show, many viewers were also outraged about the performance not following the theme of this year’s BET Awards 2009 as being a tribute to the late Michael Jackson.

Amidst all the people who expressed their outrage, well known scholars such as Dr. Janet Taylor have also expressed their disapproval of the performance.

Dr. Taylor tells MomLogic.com, “I enjoy rap with the exception of rappers who use lyrics to degrade, defame or threaten others. I don't have a problem with Lil Wayne; he is creative and his writing is brilliant at times. However, his song ‘Every Girl’ is offensive and disturbing. Debra Lee, who is also the mother of two children, should be asking herself who approved this and how these young girls were allowed to be a part of this act.”

In a recent interview with Complex, Drake has apologized and taken full responsibility for the performance.

“[It] was a terrible idea that I'll never do to myself again,” said Drake during the Complex interview. “I don't think it called for us to perform ‘Every Girl’ and ‘Always Strapped,’ and I think it was an award show filled with tributes and music and these genuine heartfelt speeches. And to sort of climax out of a very tongue-n-cheek point, and then people misconstruing Wayne's daughters and her friends coming out on stage -- it was just timed very poorly and it definitely wasn't planned like that, but with that being said, it is what is. To anyone who was offended, my personal apologies, it wasn't intended to offend anybody.”

BET plans on re-airing an edited version of the BET Awards 2009 on July 6.
