Polls Indicate Too Much Jackson in the News
4-Jul-2009
Written by: Lindsey Weedston
Most Americans feel the King of Pop is getting too much attention.
Since the death of pop legend Michael Jackson, the media has been cranking out news stories about him 24/7. Now nearly two thirds of Americans say that enough is enough.
A Pew Research Center poll found that 64 percent of 1,000 American adults surveyed felt that Jackson’s death has received too much media coverage, compared with 29 percent who said there was just enough coverage and 3 percent who said there was not enough, the Associated Press reports.
According to Media Life Magazine, Jackson’s death covered 93 percent of the cable news channels’ stories immediately following the incident.
Thirty percent of the poll’s respondents said that they have been following the news relating to the star’s death “very closely.” However, this is a paltry sum when compared to the deaths of Princess Diana and John F. Kennedy, Jr., both of whom had 54 percent of respondents following their deaths very closely.
Some fans are also disturbed by the amount of detail in the media’s coverage of Jackson’s demise. PopEater reports that a British tabloid printed a cover photo of the pop star while he was either dead or dying. Many people are questioning the taste and judgment of the magazine, including much of its staff. However, its editorial director is defending the publisher’s choice to use the photo.
