“MacGruber“ Movie in the Works
8-Jul-2009
Written by: John Winn

Val Kilmer, Ryan Phillippe reportedly interested in a full length adaptation of Will Forte sketch.

If Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillippe have their way, "Saturday Night Live's" Will Forte may don his trademark "MacGruber" vest and mullet--this time for the big screen.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Phillippe and Kilmer are in talks with studio Relativity Media to star in the film alongside Forte and Kristen Wiig.

Based on the skits written by Jorma Taccone and John Solomon, the completed feature script was penned by Taccone, Solomon and Forte. Taccone will direct the film while Solomon and "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels will oversee the production.

The movie version will be faithful to the character made popular by the long-running "SNL" sketches, but with a twist.

Instead of being set in a generic location like a mine or an illegal supply ship--as the Super Bowl XLIII ad was--the movie will be more expansive, tracking MacGruber from his hideaway in Ecuador to an evil genius's lair.

Phillippe will reportedly play Piper, an army colonel who recruits MacGruber from retirement to help him defuse an atomic bomb set up by mad scientist Cunth, played by Kilmer.

After weeks of speculation in Hollywood, Forte confirmed the film on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" last month. However, preparations for the film have already been underway, clearing the way for the film to begin production in August.

Because of the fast pace of the proposal from script to production, the film could be out by next year, well ahead of a "MacGyver" film underway at New Line Cinemas.

If successful, the movie could revitalize a mainstay for "SNL" alums: their own movie. The trend began in the 1980s as Eddie Murphy transitioned from sharp-tongued comic to sharp-tongued actor, beginning with "48 Hrs" and continued with a spate of films including "Ghostbusters," "Wayne's World" and the "Austin Powers" films.

Although Paramount Pictures has traditionally produced spin-off films for "SNL" actors and alums, it is unknown whether the studio will take over production for the movie.
