‘America’s Got Talent’: Week 3 Part 2
9-Jul-2009
Written by: Kimberly Morgan

Auditions brought Houston a handful of promising contestants.

NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” continued on Wednesday at 9 p.m. with auditions in Houston, Texas. After Nick Cannon, host, introduced the judges -- Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and a cowboy gear-clad David Hasselhoff -- another three cowboys kicked off the auditions on stage.

They call themselves “The Texas Tenors” and sang in perfect harmony to a country song, leaving the audience wanting more. The judges put the tenors through to the next round.

Bruce Thomas made sounds with his hands to “Yankee Doodle Dandy” but it wasn’t enough to impress the judges. More joined him including a Burlesque troupe who struggled through the performance, two flutists who sounded off key, and a man who had dollar bills stapled to his body and hooks attached and chained to his nipples.

Things turned around in no time. Acrodunk, a group of athletic acrobats, delighted the audience with plenty of tricks and hoop shooting. “We’ve seen so many punks in trunks trying to do dunks. You are by far the best,” said Hasselhoff before the judges put them through.

Following in their footsteps were, among others, a belly dancer who performed with a lit candelabra on her head, and a rapper named Eclipse.

Ages always range on the show, and tonight was no different. Elisha Miller, 8, sang and played the keyboard to “Proud Mary.” Both she and the judges believed she needed to work on her singing, but the judges loved her personality. “I love . . . that you just take over the stage,” Hasselhoff said.

Later, Grandma Lee, 75, performed stand-up comedy that humored the audience. “The timing was great,” Osbourne said to which Lee quickly replied, “So true.” Laughing, Morgan responded, “You’re my kind of woman.”

Barbara Padilla, a Mexico native and cancer survivor, closed the show with a heartfelt opera performance. In response, the judges and audience gave her a standing ovation. “You are such an inspiration,” Osbourne said. “Keep singing because it’s healing you and . . . a lot of people,” Hasselhoff added. Her successful act put her through to the Las Vegas round.

“America’s Got Talent” airs with new episodes next Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 p.m.
