Musician Gets Back at United Airlines
10-Jul-2009
Written by: Kathryn Jordan

Musician, Dave Carroll, gets back at United Airlines for damaging his $3,500 guitar.

When Dave Carroll’s Taylor guitar was smashed by United Airlines, he didn’t get mad—he got even!

Canadian duo, Sons of Maxwell, was touring the U.S. when United Airlines attendants in Chicago threw the $3,500 guitar, damaging it. Carroll told the Canadian Broadcasting Company, “We were sitting in the back of the plane with the band, and a woman who didn’t know we were musicians yells out, ‘Oh my god. They’re throwing guitars outside.’” United took responsibility, but not individual responsibility. Ultimately, Carroll was left with a damaged guitar and no compensation.

Carroll channeled his energy toward writing three songs to protest this injustice. The most popular song, “United Breaks Guitar,” has a video for it up on YouTube. As of Friday it has received 1,351,943 views. No too shabby. With all this hype United isn’t looking so good to customers. It will be interesting to see if they step up now and reimburse Carroll.
