'Bruno' Does Well on Opening Day

Cohen's controversial film topped the box office on Friday.

Sacha Baron Cohen's new film, "Bruno," topped the box office on Friday, its opening day, with $14.2 million.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Cohen's earlier film, "Borat," made only $9.2 million on its opening day. However, "Bruno" was projected on 2,756 screens, at least three times as many screens as "Borat's" debut on only 837. Its $14.2 million earnings dominated over popular films "Ice Age 3" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

Hollywood Reporter said "Bruno" could very well earn at least $30 million in U.S. and Canada through Sunday. "Borat" earned $26.5 million during its first weekend and a grand total of $128.5 million. Meanwhile, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" placed second on Friday earning $8.4 million on its 10th day, while "Transformers" placed third with $7.6 million on the start of its third weekend.

One comedian describes Cohen as an actor who stays true to his characters, New York Daily News reports. "I feel he does outrageous things," said Reese Waters, winner of the Emerging Comics contest at 2008's Underground Comedy Festival, "but it doesn't feel like he's doing it just to be funny -- it's just the character is funny, and that is what the character would do."
