100 new words were added to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.
Do you know someone that is a locavore? Are you aware that your frenemy is planning the latest scandal to make the next school year unbearable? Have you seen the latest webisode or vlog on YouTube? If you are not sure what these words mean, the latest edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary may be able to help. According to MSNBC, Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary has added nearly 100 words that reflect the latest trends in today’s society.
Publisher John Morse said that the new additions to the dictionary are related to changes in technology, increased environmental awareness, and increased health concerns. “These are not new words in the language, by any means,” said Morse. “When words like ‘neuroprotective’ and ‘cardioprotective’ show up in the Collegiate, it's because we've made the judgment that these are not just words used by specialists. These really are words now likely to show up in the New York Times.”
Words added to the dictionary include waterboarding (an interrogation technique that induces the sensation of drowning), green-collar (deals with actions for protecting the natural environment), and reggaeton (music of Puerto Rican origin that combines rap and Caribbean beat).
