Kevin Cogill apologizes, says he was trying to help the band.
Guns N’ Roses fan Kevin Cogill pleaded guilty to copyright infringement in a plea deal nine months ago. The blogger posted nine songs from the band’s first new album in 17 years on his Web site prior to its release last November, Reuters reports. The CD, “Chinese Democracy,” did not sell well.
According to NME.com, Cogill apologized for his actions, saying, “I never intended to hurt the artist. I intended to promote the artist because I am a fan.”
Cogill was sentenced to one year of probation and two months of home confinement. He also must allow the government access to his computer and record an anti-piracy commercial for the Recording Industry Association of America.
Although prosecutors were pushing for fines and jail time, they feel that the lesser sentence will still serve as a warning to others. According to the Associated Press, Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian commented that there are too many people who consider posting copyrighted work online to be a “victimless crime.”
