A New York gallery illegally sold paintings by the actor’s late father.
A New York art gallery sold numerous paintings by actor Robert De Niro's late father without the actor's consent, the Manhattan District Attorney's office said on Tuesday.
Lawrence B. Salander, 59, and Salander-O'Reilly Galleries LLC were indicted, Tuesday, with grand larceny and falsifying business records, totaling $5 million from several estates.
According to Reuters, Salander was arrested in March for leading an $88 million art investment scam that also fooled former tennis champ John McEnroe and Bank of America.
Salander and other dealers at the New York gallery sold paintings by De Niro Sr., an abstract Expressionist who died of cancer in 1993.
The De Niro Sr. estate lost more than $1 million, the DA’s office said.
Robert De Niro has coordinated exhibitions of his father’s work around the globe and keeps many of his paintings at his home.
