The cartoon sponge has been airing on Nickelodeon for ten years.
It seems that almost anyone that has had cable in the past decade could probably tell you which cartoon character is absorbent, yellow, and porous.
“SpongeBob SquarePants” marks its tenth year on Nickelodeon this summer.
Nickelodeon and sister channel VH1 are celebrating everyone’s favorite sea sponge.
On Tuesday, VH1 premiered “Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants,” a documentary about the history of the show. This weekend, Nick will air a 50-hour “Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash Weekend,” which begins at 8 p.m. Friday with a new episode.
“SpongeBob” has been the number one show with kids ages 2 to 11 for seven consecutive years, and usually boasts an average of 70 million viewers a month.
An episode featuring the voice of Johnny Depp aired in April and racked up 5.8 million viewers. An hour long made for TV movie, “Truth or Square,” will feature the voices of Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Robin Williams and Craig Ferguson, and will air in the fall.
Actor Tom Kenny, who plays the character, told Reuters he’s having a blast with the role.
“It's a dream job,” Kenny said. “You are this iconic character that people enjoy spending time with, and who makes people laugh. It's great.”
