McCartney Makes Melodies from Marquee
Paul McCartney played a free mini-concert from atop the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater yesterday, where he was taping a performance for "Late Show with David Letterman."
Thousands of fans, who learned of the event via Twitter and word of mouth, stood on nearby sidewalks that had been closed off for the midtown Manhattan event. The set contained seven songs and lasted about half an hour.
McCartney played Beatles number "Get Back" and "Sing the Changes" off his latest CD, "Electric Arguments," for the CBS broadcast. He then surprised his fans by playing five additional songs including "Band on the Run," "Helter Skelter" and "Back in the U.S.S.R."
This marks McCartney's return to the theater after 45 years. In 1964 The Beatles made their U.S. television debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in the same studio now home to Letterman.
The ex-Beatle was in town to inaugurate the Mets' new home at Citi Field with concerts beginning tomorrow.
The concert echoed The Beatles' final performance, the Savile Row rooftop show, when the Fab Four played atop the building that used to hold Apple studios.
