'Voltron' Movie Could Rival 'Transformers'
Voltron, another giant robot anime from the 1980s, will likely be made into a movie within the next year or two.
Producers Charles Roven, Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander are teaming up to make a live-action film out of the old cult favorite, Reuters reports. The three acquired the rights from the company that distributed the anime throughout the U.S., where it has been gathering dust for over 20 years.
According to MTV.com, the show was about a team of five humans who piloted five lion-shaped robots and fought against the evil King Zarkon and his minions. When things got bad, the five would combine to create a giant human/lion robot called Voltron. The movie will follow the same basic premise.
The producers have yet to set up the studio, but according to News in Film, they already have a deal with Sony, who was looking for something to rival the "Transformers" franchise.
Ted Koplar of World Events says, "Unlike other robotic action movies, 'Voltron' is the personification of the human spirit, a quality that will set this movie apart."
