Sexy Miley Cyrus Angers Disney

Cyrus's "pole-dancing" performance draws criticism.

Disney was quick to distance itself from a performance by Miley Cyrus, the star of its hit TV show "Hannah Montana," at the Aug. 10 Teen Choice Awards.

The provocatively dressed singer, donning a pair of short shorts, a tank top, and biker boots, performed her new single "Party in the USA" while dancing around what appeared to many to resemble a stripper's pole.

Disney, which apparently had beforehand knowledge of Cyrus's act, issued a statement prior to the performance: "Disney Channel won't be commenting on that performance, although parents can rest assured that all content presented on the Disney Channel is age-appropriate for our audience — kids 6-14 —and consistent with what our brand values are." .

Despite the criticisms of Disney and others, the 16-year-old singer's father, singer-songwriter Billy Ray Cyrus, came to her defense telling Access Hollywood, "You know what? I just think that Miley loves entertaining people, she loves singing [and] songwriting." .

Cyrus's controversial performance comes as the singer speculatively attempts to shed her image as an entertainer for "tween" audiences in order to become more marketable to an older crowd. .

In a recent interview with MTV, Cyrus praised the comeback of Britney Spears, calling the singer "a good friend of the family."
