Doo-Wop Star John Carter Dies

The last remaining member of the Flamingos, John E. Carter, died Friday at age 75.

The two time Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer was pronounced dead Friday in his home town of Harvey, Chicago due to lung cancer. The singer left behind a long career in the music business by being a part of two legendary R&B groups: the Flamingos and the Dells.

Carter is mostly known for his falsetto performance in the remake of "Oh What a Night" while with the Dells in 1969. The soulful singer left the Flamingos in 1960 to join the Dells and doo-wopped with them for the next 49 years. The Dells saw the most success when Carter joined and then toured with the likes of Ray Charles and Quincy Jones.

The Flamingos were honored with an induction to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Carter was then inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame again for his work with the Dells. Carter and other members of the group even had a movie loosely based on their lives, called "The Five Heartbeats," in 1991.

Now, other R&B groups of the Chicago area are feeling for the family of the beloved singer.

"We're going to try to give them great support," lead tenor of the Chi-Lites tells wbbm780.com.

No word yet on the funeral plans for the Dells star. Carter will be remembered by his loving grandchildren and five daughters.
