Courtney Love Demands That Lawsuit Gets Thrown Out
Courtney Love, former lead singer of the now defunct band, Hole, is calling for the lawsuit brought upon her by fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir in March to be dismissed by the courts. Simorangkir intended to sue the singer because Love apparently refused to pay for a custom-made dress that she made for her. When asked to pay up, Love apparently freaked out and began smearing the designer on her blog, calling Simorangkir everything from a drug dealer to a thief.
Now, Love is trying to have the lawsuit rejected on the grounds that her blogging is not libel. According to her lawyer, "Alternative mediums such as Twitter and personal Web blogs enjoy the same First Amendment protection as do newspapers, television and radio. It is important that this cherished right not be marginalized when speech is communicated via the Internet. Ms. Cobain enjoys using Twitter and expressing her views." However, given the ferocity of Love's libelous remarks, it seems likely that her request for the lawsuit to be dismissed will not be heard.
