Just a little babbling on some of the latest DVDs sent to review
Well, another week, another DVD to check out. This column hopes to summarize the latest and greatest in the video rental bin.
First up is Running Dry, basically a presentation from former US Senator Paul Simon about the follies and foils of our current water shortage. Fortunately, they don’t hold any punches and give you the straight facts. Unfortunately, it seems the future is grim and if we don’t do anything, we’ll be sucking the moisture out of dirt in a few years. It’s well presented but a little bit of a downer.
Speaking of downers, The Aviator just came out, but the extra is the key. Why is it a downer, actually not so much, but they do delve into obsessive compulsive disorder with a documentary and a discussion, and Leo DiCaprio talks about how he really had to get into his character and it caused him to feel almost as wacky as Howard Hughes became. Sure the movie won a million awards, but the second disc is an interesting watch on the disorder.
Speaking of disorders, we have the DVD release of Kinsey. In this case I was more mesmerized by the DVD than the extras disc. The film after all goes into the life of Kinsey, but what’s more amazing is how much of a horny devil this man was, especially for a time like the 1950s. He gives entirely new meaning to the term “Happy Days.” He sleeps with his assistant, his assistant sleeps with his wife. His other assistants sleep with each others wives… all in the name of science.
And for those who believe that American Idol is a science and not just an art, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson are presenting the Ultimate Voice Coach. Now if you start off like a William Hung, you might still sound like a William Hung but this time you can hit one or two notes every so often. They’ve taken two voice coaches, got them to give three lessons, and they do this cute and slightly corny—okay, more corny than cute—introduction to each coach. They find it “amazing” and believe a lot more talented people will come because of this. Just what we need, another decade of American Idol.
Lastly, we just got in Bad Education, a DVD that is being released in NC-17 and with good reason. You can’t take a story of a Catholic School sexual trauma as deep and well scandalous as this and simply PG it. This deserves to be shown as it was intended. If you don’t want to see intimate details, then don’t go asking about these subjects.
Until next time, keep watching.
