Film Studios Agree on Download to Own DivX Files
Sony, Lionsgate, Paramount, and Warner Bros. are the first film studios to offer U.S. consumers download-to-own DivX films which can be freely stored on DVDs, mobile phones, USB drives, and more.
Home Media Magazine reports that a mix of new and classic films can be downloaded from FilmFresh.com. The site sells older releases for $9.99, and newer titles can reach up to $15.99. The films are in the DivX digital media format, which is playable on millions of DVD and Blu-ray players, Playstation 3s, and HDTVs.
The companies say this is the first time U.S. residents can use the DivX technology to freely transfer films as they like. DivX had previously launched a download store in France with Warner Bros, and plans to start similar enterprises throughout Europe this year.
"Film Fresh is now a one-stop shop for film enthusiasts of all kinds, and we are quite excited about our expansion into premium Hollywood content," said Rick Bolton, founder and CEO of Film Fresh. "We have always believed that DivX offers the best download choice for consumers, since it gives people the freedom to own and watch films on a wide variety of electronic devices from many different manufacturers.
"Download-to-own is going to play a critical role in the future of film distribution."
